Fiddle vs Violin?
I really want to learn to play Irish Fiddle music but there is nobody in my area that offers lessons. I have found someone offering Violin Lessons… would it be worth taking them or is playing the fiddle completely different?
They’re the same instrument, so start taking lessons with the Violin Teacher.
The fiddle music you want to play is merely another form/style of music — you still need to learn fingering and bowing. There are other techniques like pizzicato and half-stop harmonics that may or may not be called for in Irish fiddle music, but at least you’ll know them.
Once you advance into intermediate technique, you can seek out someone to teach/coach you in the fiddle music. Alternatively, you may be able to figure it out for yourself using a combination of your fingers being technically able to figure out how to produce what your ear hears.
Best of luck — and have fun. Just don’t get too drunk playing in Irish pubs.
