Bill Viola Video

So why is Bill Viola’s work considered video art and not performance …..?
when…performance can be performed in front of an audience ‘live’ or it can be filmed and played within an installation??????
although his works a very theatrical and can be consider “performance” i doubt the could be performed in front of an audience….without someone being burned or drowned ..also a lot of the work is computer generated so it could not be performed “live”
good question and something that could be the basis of an interesting essay
